People say the darndest things. Especially, oh, certain politicians and political activists these days.
Let’s ponder three of the latest bewildering statements from the world of politics …
1. “Welcome to the end of democracy!”
This from the mouth of the activist Jack Posobiec at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Posobiec suggested that democracy would hopefully soon be replaced by a Christian nationalist government.
“Welcome to the end of democracy! We’re here to overthrow it completely. We didn’t get all the way there on January 6th, but we will endeavor to get rid of it and replace it with this right here.”
At which point Posobiec held up a Christian cross.
“That’s right, because all glory is not to government, all glory to God.”
The comments drew applause from the crowd and an “Amen!” from Steve Bannon.
Cheering for the end of democracy, really?
Well, welcome to the theocracy, I suppose. And it’s beyond me why things like this don’t get more play in the mainstream press.
You can see Posobiec’s comments here:
2. Beware of languages that illegally cross borders
“We have languages coming into our country, we have nobody that speaks those languages. They're truly foreign languages. Nobody speaks them.”
- Donald Trump, in a recent speech at the border
I know, it sounds from these words that disembodied languages are somehow infiltrating the country, right?
But no, not exactly. Trump has talked about this in less muddled words in other speeches. He is actually lamenting the fact that illegal immigrants are allegedly coming across the border “from countries unknown” and are speaking languages that no one else in the United States speaks.
OK, but is that even true? From countries unknown? Does this mean there are countries that the State Department or United Nations has never heard of? Hiding in some dark, undiscovered part of the globe and sending illegal immigrants to infiltrate the U.S.? And speaking a language that not a single person in the United States knows about?
Obviously not. As the Washington Post and CNN each noted when fact-checking the speech.
3. So, it’s OK for a raped 10-year-old to be forced to give birth?
“While a pregnancy might have been difficult on a 10-year-old body, a woman’s body is designed to carry life.”
- Laura Strietmann, executive director of Cincinnati Right to Life, discussing a 10-year-old rape victim whom she believes should not have traveled to Indiana for an abortion after being unable to receive care in Ohio.
So, that means a 10-year-old rape victim should be forced to give birth? Is that where the end of Roe v. Wade is leading us?
This quote appears to be from about 10 months ago and it recently resurfaced, which is when I came across it. But it doesn’t matter whether it was said this year or last; extremist though it may be, it reflects the opinion of one segment of the political spectrum in America today.
And when you also have conservative activists exulting about the end of democracy and the rise of Christian nationalism, well …
As I said, welcome to the theocracy.
