It was Barack Obama’s birthday recently. He was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, making him 63 years old. Crazily, Obama (who left the presidency almost 8 years ago) is 18 years younger than Joe Biden, 15 years younger than Donald Trump, and only four years older than Kamala Harris.
Of course, after spending much of his childhood in Hawaii (with a detour of a few years in Indonesia when his Mom worked there), Obama later attended Columbia University in New York and Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He then settled in Chicago, where he married Michelle, got his start in politics, and became a U.S. Senator from Illinois.
The Obama’s home is in the Hyde Park section of Chicago, not too far from the Museum of Science and Industry and the Lake Michigan shoreline, or from the University of Chicago, where the future president taught constitutional law. The Obama Presidential Library and Museum, scheduled to open in 2026, will also be nearby, in Jackson Park.
Of all the presidential homes I’ve seen, though, one thing was different about this one. That is, while the Obamas currently live in Washington, D.C., this is still the private home of a living former president and so has Secret Service protection. Not too many of those homes around.
