Stepping away from politics again briefly, after another whirlwind week of veepstakes and other political news …
The above photo complements my travel piece from July 29, Chasing the Spirit of Moses, about hiking up Mount Sinai in Egypt during the night in order to view the sunrise from the top. This is a photo taken on the way back down the mountain of some local Bedouins and their camels, who shared the trail with us.
The trail begins and ends near St. Catherine’s Monastery, which was built in the 6th century and is still a Christian monastery, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Bedouins help care for the site along with the Christian monks. Inside the walls of the monastery, where visitors are allowed, is a bush that is supposedly a descendant of the burning bush seen by Moses on Mt. Sinai, as described in the Old Testament.
